This region groups cities in and around the northern Blackland country and the Cross Timbers, from the Red River cities of Sherman, Denison and Gainesville south through the Dallas-Fort Worth edge to Cleburne, Weatherford and Stephenville.

It contains some of the most clay-heavy soils profiled on this site, around McKinney and Waxahachie, and some of the lightest, around Stephenville and Weatherford. A bedrock or hardpan layer within three feet of the surface is mapped at many sampled points, which makes how piers are installed and tested a practical question as well as soil moisture.

Across the 12 North Texas cities profiled here, the soil survey rates shrink-swell high around 7, moderate around 3 and low around 2.
